Read the two reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try on a Friday night. Ouch. It was karaoke night (from 6-9PM. Thursdays too?). Very loud. Ordered drinks (my small frozen margarita was competent, but unremarkable) and considered leaving rather than placing a food order. Inertia kept us in our seats and I was glad it did. The karaoke singers were at least enthusiastic, if not all that talented, and it was fun to watch families having such a good time. I ordered the molcajete with poblano chiles and tomatillo salsa. I didn't really know what it was and, at $13 it was pretty much the most expensive thing on the menu. The service was slow, in fact they were so slow when I asked for a refill on my margarita that I eventually canceled the order because we were so close to leaving. My wife ordered the chiles rellenos with added grilled chicken. Both were surprisingly good. The molcajete came in a thick stone bowl with legs, shaped like a bull. The stone kept the dish hot. There was chicken, beef, and shrimp in the dish along with peppers, onions, and other vegetables in a spicy sauce. In fact, it was very spicy and I sweated profusely. The dish came with 6 flour tortillas and I ate the molcajete as if it was fajitas. I took home about half and enjoyed it over rice for lunch the next day. My wife really enjoyed her chiles rellenos. So what is the score? I don't know about the rest of the menu, but I give the food we ordered 4 stars. Can't blame the restaurant for the karaoke since it was clearly advertised on the door when we went in. But the service was slow enough to earn a demerit, hence the three stars. We will go back, just not on a Friday night.

My wife and I have settled in our favorite place for Mexican. With over 10 visits under our belt we both agree that Rancho Viejo is the quality and value in the Knoxville area. Always friendly and appreciative of our patronage.

This was our first time here. We are visiting from out of town and came here because several people gave this place good reviews. Well, we were not disappointed. We had the mexi egg rolls and they were delicious. A little spicy with lots of flavor! I ordered the chimichangas supremas. Four mini chimichangas. The shrimp chimichanga was by far the best. And shrimp can easily be rubbery in a chimichanga. The shredded chicken was also really good. The chopped beef was pretty good but I wasn't a huge fan of the ground beef. The guacamole that came with it was excellent. Very fresh tasting. The doorbell plays fur elise which is an odd choice for a Mexican restaurant. It was funny the first few times but became mildly irritating as the evening went on. That said, we would definitely come here again.

Really hit the spot. Vegetarian friendly options that were easily turned into vegan dishes with some simple requests. They have the freshest tasting guacamole that I've had since leaving California. Beware the sizes of the margaritas; medium is huge and large is frightening.

We visited Rancho Viejo today, the first day that it opened and we were pleasantly surprised! All of our dishes were great, and reasonably priced. Might I HIGHLY recommend the Guacamole Cesara (?sp - I know I've spelled that wrong) but it is a guac/diced tomato DIP. Only $4 and DELISH! The Sopapilla (sp?) with ice cream was delish, as was the Flan. The food arrived quickly, all the servers were friendly with a sense of humor. We weren't able to try their mixed drinks or beer selection b/c the city had not yet approved their liquor license, so no review on those or their prices. Overall, highly recommend!

One of my favorite Mexican places. Great Mexi-Egg Rolls.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
